What do you do when you fail an airline application?

It’s bad enough to have the disappointment of being rejected by an airline you have applied to. It’s even harder not really knowing where you went wrong, as airlines don’t give out feedback. They receive far too many applications to be able to reply to everyone. That doesn’t help you understand what you can do to improve your chances next time.
And even worse still- for many airlines you have to wait for 12 months before you can re-apply!
So how can you make that 12 months’ work in your favour? Here are a few tips.

  • 1. How are your English language skills? If it’s not your first language make sure you get plenty of practice in so you know your language skills won’t let you down.

  • 2. Have you thought about getting a First Aid qualification? Not only will this be of practical benefit, it will also show how proactive you are about gaining the skills you need to be excellent cabin crew.

  • 3. Is your CV a bit flimsy? If you don’t have much work experience or all of your skills are based in the same environment you can broaden your skills through voluntary work. Depending on what you choose to get involved with you’ll be able to build on your skills of working with people, understanding people from different backgrounds or cultures, practice helping and serving others or even getting your hands dirty and showing you’re not afraid to muck in! Either way, it will impress a recruiter as it will stand out and really say something positive about you as a person.

  • 4. Do you lack customer service experience? If you need to find a new job before you can reapply to the airlines make sure you get one which involves customer service. The airlines will want to see how well you serve the public so they can judge what your behaviour and attitudes might be like once you are in uniform.

  • 5. Of course we are going to suggest this, but go on our Cabin Crew Course! Have a look at what other attendees have said about it if you aren’t sure it would be worthwhile. We cover so much of what you need to know, you’ll be kicking yourself that you didn’t go before!

  • 6. Some airlines offer ground work apprenticeships to help you get a feel of the industry and gain some invaluable customer service experience through working in an airline environment. Do some research to see if there are any current opportunities.

  • 7. Get your CV checked over. You’ll be amazed by how many mistakes you are making, and what a difference a few key tweaks can make. We can help with this (for only just over £30); we’ve reviewed hundreds of CV’s and always make them better!
